Kevin delivered a short presentation (under 15 minutes) on the remaining 1.5 and 2°C carbon budgets, downscaling from global values to Ireland.
Kevin’s contribution begins at 4m 15s.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I say … I don’t think 1.5°C is … achievable. I hope to be wrong, but I don’t see how we can do it.” (i.e. not exceed 1.5°C).
“If you add together the global pledges [the NDCs] … then by the early 2030s 2°C will be then where 1.5°C is today, in other words impossible. And so, the timeframe for delivery of major cuts in CO2… is between now and 2030 … what we do this afternoon, what do we do tomorrow, what legislation is brought in next week. No government ministers … are taking this [the Paris Agreement] seriously.
The online event was organised by Rose Wall & Clodagh Daly of communitylawandmediation.ie and included contributions on the legal dimensions of the Irish Climate Bill from Dr. Andrew Jackson (UCD), @andrewlrjackson.bsky.social and Oisín Coghlan (Friends of the Earth) @oisinc.bsky.social
